I was at Ikea the other night wandering around wishing I could buy everything. And checking out all the new things. (The new 2013 catalog is there if you haven’t gotten it yet)
I wasn’t going to get anything but I can’t leave that store without stopping by the as is section. I’ve been searching for bar stools with backs for a long time now but they were never in the budget. These 2 awesome bar stools were just sitting there waiting for me. They were in perfect condition except one was missing 2 screws. I went to the customer service desk and they gave me the 2 screws so I bought them immediately.
I brought them home and they fit perfect and are so much more comfortable then the wobbly old ones we had.
And the best part is I saved a little over $40 on them since they were discounted.
I’ve always wanted a bar in my kitchen. I love high bar tables. So now that I have this kitchen that’s bigger then I’ve ever had before I figured it was the perfect time to get a high table. But again I did some research and everything was way out of my budget so while I was at Ikea getting the supplies for my last project I also picked up a few more things. I got another Vika Amon table top, this one was 59 x 29.5 inches and in the same black brown color. I also got two Ekby Hall Brackets. I attached them to Ikea bookshelves that I already owned(I don’t think Ikea sells this style anymore). Here it is from the back, you can see the brackets where the counter overlaps.
On the other side I used L-brackets because I couldn’t find any other brackets that would fit. I’ll probably paint them so they match better.
I left an overlap so the bar stools fit under the bar. If you’re curious the bar stools are from Target.
I’m still working on organizing the shelfs. I have started a few projects already and will be posting as I finish them.
Here’s the price breakdown.
- Vika Amon table top $35.99
- Ekby Hall Brackets 2 x $4.00 = $8.00
- Already owned bookshelf $00
- Barstools 2 x $24.99 = $49.98
Total = $93.97
Most bars I looked at cost hundreds of dollars so this was a great deal and if fits perfect and matches my other counter.
While our new kitchen is much bigger and nicer then the last one it was definitely in need of some more counter space. Or maybe I just have too many kitchen toys. Either way I wanted another counter next to the stove to make cooking a lot easier. I searched endlessly for something I could buy but there was just nothing in my budget out there that would fit the space. And there was the problem of what to do with the wine/cigar fridge. Remember the wine fridge that you saw here. Since we gave that counter away to a friend when we moved last time I figured it was time to make something bigger and better.
So I went to my favorite place, IKEA. Here’s what I got.
- Akurum wall cabinet 12 x 30 inch
- Akurum wall cabinet 15 x 30 inch
- Vika Amon Table Top 47 x 23 inch
- Capita Legs 4inch
- I also had some L brackets left over from another project.
So I built the cabinets following the instructions. Since these cabinets are suppose to hang on the wall they don’t have pre drilled holes for the legs. So I had to drill all those myself but that wasn’t a big deal. After that I just put 2 L brackets on the backs and one on the sides of each of the cabinets to attach the countertop. As you can see in the photo I had to add the legs to get the counter to be the same height as the stove but you don’t need them. And you can also add doors if you wanted. (I think the simplest white door was $8) but I like the open shelves.
Here’s the price break down.
- 15 inch Cabinet $22
- 12 inch Cabinet $21
- Shelves $4 x 2 = $8
- Countertop $19.99
- Set of 4 Legs $10 x 2 =$20
Total – $90.99
Now that’s way cheaper then the ones you can buy pre made which I couldn’t find for much less $200. If you didn’t want it as high as I did you can forget the legs and it would only be $70.99.
